Contemplating Freedom this 4th of July

It is impossible to contemplate what Fourth of July and Freedom means to us this year without standing in support of and in solidarity with the members of the Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, and LGBTQ+ communities who have faced racism, discrimination, and violence, often systematically at the hands of the State — the very State which guaranteed them life, liberty, and the pursuit of their own happiness.

As an immigration firm, we are often helping people escape persecution on account of their race, religion, sexual orientation, and political opinion. However, it is hard to ignore that very same persecution of Black, Indigenous, and Transgender people in our own country, yet we often do. The callous, countless, and continued murders of these marginalized communities whether in cold blood or due to the societal devaluation of their lives, cannot be ignored. And it must end.

While some of us do not know, and will never know, what it’s like to fear being pulled over by the police, to fear walking or jogging in public, to fear that our health and lives are less important than others simply because of the way we were born, we stand with you. We will listen to you, we will lift you up, we will fight for you. We promise to learn more, to do better, and to call out acts of injustice whenever we see them.

May we all enjoy the freedoms of this country equally and equitably. And please, if you are legally able, exercise your civic duty by registering to vote and voting in Federal, State, and local elections. https://vote.gov/

Have a safe and Happy Fourth of July.
