Obtain an Honest & Thorough Case Assessment Today
Naturalization is the process through which immigrants become United States citizens. In most cases, immigrants are eligible for naturalization after five years of lawful permanent residence. Some may qualify after just three years. Contact the compassionate and experienced legal team at Murray Osorio PLLC in Newark to discuss your situation and determine if you have a pathway to U.S. citizenship.
Benefits of Naturalization
Many immigrants hesitate to apply for naturalization due to confusion or lack of awareness about the benefits. However, becoming a citizen is the only certain way to avoid deportation or removal from the country. Even long-term lawful permanent residents can face removal if deemed deportable.
Some benefits of U.S. citizenship include:
- The right to vote in local, state, and national elections.
- The ability to obtain a United States passport and travel without the fear of losing citizenship status.
- Enhanced access to public benefits like Supplemental Security Income.
- The right to sponsor green cards for family members and relatives.
- Eligibility to apply for federal government jobs.
The Naturalization Process
The naturalization process begins with the filing of Form N-400 with the United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS). Along with the form, an application fee, passport-style photos, and supporting documents must be submitted.
USCIS will issue a receipt for the form filing and, at a later date, provide an appointment letter for the immigrant to appear at a fingerprinting location for biometrics.
The final step involves an appointment letter for the naturalization interview. At the interview, the applicant will answer questions regarding their application and complete two tests: an English test and a Civic test.
If the application is approved and the tests are passed, USCIS will schedule an oath ceremony. During the ceremony, an official may inquire about the applicant's activities since the interview. The applicant will then take an Oath of Allegiance to the United States and receive a Certificate of Naturalization, officially becoming a U.S. citizen.
