DACA Celebrates One Year Anniversary

August 15 marked the one-year anniversary of the enactment of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy. The policy, implemented by the Obama Administration after Congress failed to pass the DREAM Act, allows certain undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children and attended school here to stay in the country and work without fear of deportation. The one-year anniversary of the program was marked by the release of several studies and reports revealing detailed information about those applying for the program.

According to one such study conducted by the Brooking Institute, there have been more than 557,000 DACA applications filed, with 400,562 approved, nearly 72 percent. Another 24.5 percent are still under review, with only 1.0 percent of applications having been denied.

The study also found that nearly three-quarters of applicants had been in the country for more than a decade by the time they applied, and one-third entered before they were 5 years old. Brookings also found that most applicants were between the ages of 15 to 23, with only about one-quarter of them older than 24. The study also estimates that approximately 59 percent of eligible applicants have applied.

The report shows that 74.9 percent of applicants were born in Mexico, followed by El Salvador (4.0 percent), Honduras (2.7 percent), Guatemala (2.5 percent), South Korea (1.5 percent), Peru (1.4 percent), Brazil (1.2 percent), Colombia (1.1 percent), Ecuador (1.0) and Philippines (0.7).

A similar study by the Immigration Policy Center found that approximately 61% of DACA recipients have obtained a new job since receiving DACA, 54% have opened their first bank account, 38% have obtained their first credit card, and 61% have obtained a driver’s license.
